Twelve revelations of humble work

some time ago, I read an article by Financial Times columnist Lucy Kellaway, who wrote about the inspiration her son got from working in a takeaway fast food restaurant after graduating from high school. after reading the article, as a post-80s generation, although I have only been working for a few years, I have done a lot of humble work since childhood, and I have gained a lot of inspiration from it. I believe that these revelations can also make you feel useful more or less.

I was born and raised in rural Fujian. I got my first job in the third grade: picking bracken in the mountains in spring and selling it in the market. My mother helped me tie up a bundle of bracken into small bundles, cut off the roots of bracken neatly, and sprinkled some water on its surface, coupled with the fact that the bracken I picked were relatively fresh and stout, so I sold out my products quickly without hawking at the market, and went home earlier than my friends who set up a stall. This job gives me several lessons that will benefit me all my life:

However, when I soon sold bracken in the market and made money, I found it too easy to make money. Later, I did several other jobs, including now working as a freelance writer, and the experience is the same. Some contributions are easy to earn, while others are difficult to earn. Life is also the same, sometimes a little hard, enjoy a little, that piece of 100 yuan, a piece of easy to earn a little bit, a piece of hard to earn a little bit, alternately to live a lifetime?

it feels good to make money. That spring I earned the first bucket of gold in my life-50 yuan. I was very excited and I felt great about making money. Many people may still remember the feeling of being paid for the first time, but then most people forget how enjoyable it is to make money.

appearance is important. Whether it is a person or a product, appearance is very important. People tend to make value judgments based on the appearance of someone or something, so it is positive to make the appearance as beautiful as possible. This is also the psychological "halo effect". It is often shown that a person's first impression of another person (or thing) determines his overall view, but does not see the true quality of the other person, forming a good or bad "stereotype". Being able to skillfully use the "halo effect" will contribute to the development of things and the achievement of goals.

your product is your billboard, it is your most important spokesman, the product is not afraid of no sales. This revelation can be extended to other aspects of life. If you are a middle school student, your grades and your performance at school are your products. If you have excellent grades and excellent performance in school, you are not afraid that no university will want you. If you are an office worker, the result of your work is the product you produce. If your performance is good and is recognized by customers, you are not afraid that no company will want you. my second job was as a shopping guide in my brother's clothing store in Guangzhou when I graduated from the third year of high school. In addition to being a shopping guide in this store, I also worked as a shopping guide in my sister-in-law's stall, which is very close to my brother's shop. At that time, that street was a night market street, selling food, clothing, all kinds of daily necessities, very lively, and all the stalls were open until midnight.

I have been in this job for a month. Most of the time, the customers who come into the clothing store don't have a good attitude towards the shopping guides, and some of them are even impolite. When you sell to him, they don't even look at you. I was very uncomfortable at first, but I was desensitized over a long period. So I got the fifth revelation:

there are a lot of people and things that upset you in your life, and you can overcome them through a lot of training. Although you have overcome the uncomfortable feeling at work, it doesn't mean you will fall in love with the job. There is a difference between the two.

my sister-in-law's floor stall sells women's jeans. When a customer likes a certain style but this style doesn't have the size she wants, for example, she wants size 27, but we only have size 28. Our usual practice is to take these size 28 trousers and say to the customer, now go to the warehouse to find her size, and then run to my brother's clothing store to cut the size of the pants. Then come back with these pants and tell her it's the size 27 she wants. This thing gives me two other lessons:

be flexible and flexible in doing things. When I was working in a clothing store, I didn't meet a girl who wore size 27 jeans but bought a size 28 to return them. We will not deceive our customers with trousers that are two sizes larger than they are. Usually one-size short, the pants are only a little bigger, they don't care, they can still make do with them.

where there is no business, there is no adultery. Businessmen often play tricks and tell lies for their interests. As customers, we should keep our eyes open. But many times it's no use keeping your eyes wide open. You don't even know you've been cheated.

the day of selling clothes in Guangzhou is a hot summer. I get off work afternoon every day, and even at one or two o'clock at night, the air is still stuffy. Late at night, with summer fatigue, I lay on the narrow bed in the attic of my brother's shop. I heard the "crash" of street cleaners sweeping the street. I got the next revelation:

there will always be people doing more humble and harder work than yours, and you should learn to be grateful for your life. When I learned to be grateful for my work, I reduced my complaints about my work. You know, if you make a copy of yourself it's even worse to complain about a job you don't like, and no one wants to work with someone who likes to complain.

at the same time, this revelation also makes me respect other people more. No matter what kind of work they are doing, they are people who are working hard, worthy of respect, and their work deserves respect and recognition. The sanitation workers who sweep the streets, the farmers who grow vegetables, the outsiders who set up stalls to sell breakfast. While they work hard for their own lives, they also bring value to other people and even the whole society.

my third job was as an information collector in a company with a daily payday during the summer vacation of my freshman year. We have to make one to two hundred phone calls every day to tell each other that we have a copy of industry information to send to each other free of charge, to get information about each other's company and collect information about the heads of the marketing and technical departments of the other party. This gives me a great lesson:

there is no such thing as free lunch, only exchange. Some of the people who received my call would refuse me, and some would hear that they could get an industry journal for free (maybe it was of no use to them at all, and I didn't know if it had been mailed later). They are willing to tell me the detailed address of the company, the names of key leaders, and other information, which enables me to finish the day's work smoothly. People will be moved when they hear the word "free". There is no free lunch in the world. We have to pay a journal to get the information, and the other party has to disclose the company's information to get the journal. To get this information, my boss has to hire a group of college students like me to make phone calls and train us.

so, if you want something from someone else, you can first see what you have to exchange with them. Just like children in kindergarten can exchange their teddy bears with each other to play with another child's electric car. This is very useful wisdom of life.

this information collection company evaluates employees every week. If you make a large number of phone calls and collect a lot of information, you will not only get the day's salary and public praise from the boss when you get off work on Friday. You can also get a material reward, which could be a box of chocolates or a high-quality nail Clipper set. If your performance is very bad, you may not come to work next week. So I got another lesson:

the competition in the workplace is cruel, but it feels good to win the competition. I worked hard on the phone for two weeks, got a compliment and a reward, and it felt really good. Later, I also did a similar job of telemarketing, but selling fashion magazines, I also felt the cruel competition in the workplace. If you do a good job, you will not only get a high salary, but your boss will also give you the latest mobile phone. If you don't do well, you can only get the lowest salary, or even get fired.

my fifth job is as a waiter in a cafe, which serves simple Chinese and Western food in addition to coffee. The job is very busy on weekends and free on weekdays. During our idle working hours, two other female colleagues and I will chat, and some colleagues will use the working time to learn Japanese, whether it is chatting or studying, the boss will criticize when he sees it. Once when I was washing the dishes, I accidentally broke a cup and lost 38 yuan. At that time, I only earned 5 yuan an hour. Working in a cafe gives me the eleventh lesson:

there is no freedom in working days, especially when you are doing such a low-skilled job, not only do you have no freedom, most of the time your pay for your work is also very low. Therefore, after this job, I cherish my study time in the university more and study harder. I hope I can find a better job after graduation. Studying hard made me get a lot of scholarships in the university, so I regarded study as a job, as another way to make money, which further promoted my study.

after graduating from college, I worked as a copywriter in an advertising agency. to save enough money for a trip to Tibet, I worked part-time as a door-to-door preschool teacher in a preschool education center on weekends, teaching kindergarten and first-and second-grade children's thinking math. My salary is 40 yuan for 35 minutes of a class, but as long as it is calculated carefully, it is still very little. it takes two hours to go back and forth, and the car fare is only about 10 yuan an hour.

once, in cold winter, I was waiting for the bus at the bus stop after class in Pudong Gaohang. I wanted to go to Hongkou to take another child's class, but I stood in the cold wind for half an hour and couldn't wait for the bus. My whole body was frozen stiff, and the boy's mother called me again. I felt very desperate. On another occasion, when I finished my class, the teacher in the center temporarily asked me to take the place of another teacher. It was very far away. I was so tired after class that it rained heavily on the way home. The teacher of the preschool education center called me. I cried as soon as I answered the phone. In these moments, I have learned the 12th lesson: when you encounter difficulties at work, you often have to face them alone, even when you encounter difficulties in your life, even if others can help you. In the end, it is you who can help you out. In addition, you are a master at solving problems in your own life, so believe in yourself. There are no shortcuts in life. If you want to realize your dream, you can only rely on yourself.
